Certificate of Insurance for Carpenters

How carpenters get a certificate of insurance (COI). What it is, what it shows, and how to get one fast for your next job.

โœ“ Same-day coverage typically available โœ“ Instant COI after you bind โœ“ Independent agency โ€” multiple carriers โœ“ Licensed agents

Why Carpenters Get Asked for a COI So Often

Carpentry work triggers certificate requests more than almost any other trade on a job site. Pulling a permit, getting approved by a GC's subcontractor coordinator, satisfying an HOA before a deck build, or onboarding with a new property management company โ€” each of these checkpoints wants the same one-page proof that you're insured before you touch the property. It's not paperwork for its own sake: for framing and structural work in particular, the person requesting it is trying to confirm your coverage actually matches the risk of what you're about to build.

The Description of Operations Line Matters More Than People Think

Every COI includes a short line describing what you do โ€” and for carpenters, that line does real work. A certificate that reads "framing and structural carpentry" gets reviewed differently than one that reads "finish carpentry and trim installation," because the underlying risk is different. If your COI describes your business too narrowly or too broadly compared to the actual job, a GC's insurance reviewer may flag it and hold up your start date. When we issue your certificate, we make sure the operations description matches the scope of the specific job, not just a generic catch-all.

Additional Insured Requests Get More Layered on Commercial Jobs

On a residential remodel, you're usually just adding the homeowner or their property manager. On a commercial build, it can get more layered โ€” the GC wants to be named, sometimes the developer or property owner above them wants to be named too, and if you're subcontracting part of the work to a specialty installer, they may be asking you for the same thing in reverse. A blanket additional insured endorsement handles the first two automatically; for anything more specific, tell us the exact names and we'll confirm the certificate reflects it before the job starts.

When a Job Needs More Than Just a GL Certificate

Standard GL certificates are the norm, but some jobs call for more. If you're delivering custom cabinetry or millwork to a site days or weeks before installation, a GC or property manager may specifically ask whether those materials are covered while they're staged on-site and not yet installed โ€” that's an installation floater question, separate from your general liability. If you carry that coverage, we can note it on your certificate package so there's no ambiguity about what's protected while your materials sit in a garage or storage area waiting for install day.

Getting a COI Before Your Crew Shows Up

Once you're bound with us, certificates are issued instantly โ€” no waiting on underwriting to process a new request every time you land a job. Give us the certificate holder's name and address, and any specific wording the GC or property manager requires, and we'll get it back to you the same day. That matters most on framing jobs, where a delayed start costs the whole crew a day of scheduled work, not just you.

What GCs Commonly Require From Carpentry Subs

  • General liability with limits of at least $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate (structural and framing work sometimes pushes this to $2M/$4M)
  • The GC, and sometimes the property owner, named as additional insured
  • A waiver of subrogation in favor of the GC
  • Primary and non-contributory wording on larger commercial builds
  • Workers compensation if you're bringing a crew, not working solo

FAQ

Common questions

Should my COI say I'm a framer or a finish carpenter?+

It should reflect the actual scope of the job you're bidding โ€” framing and structural work reads differently to an underwriter or GC than finish carpentry and trim. We match the operations description on your certificate to the job in front of you.

Can one certificate satisfy both the GC and the property owner?+

Often yes, if both need to be named as additional insured โ€” we can list multiple parties on a single certificate. Tell us who needs to be named and we'll confirm it's structured correctly before you send it out.

Does a GL certificate also prove I have installation floater coverage?+

Not automatically โ€” GL and an installation floater are separate coverages. If a job specifically requires proof that staged materials are covered before installation, let us know and we'll make sure that's documented alongside your standard GL certificate.

How fast can I get a certificate for a job starting tomorrow?+

Once you're bound, certificates are issued instantly โ€” same day, including any specific additional insured or primary and non-contributory language a GC requires.

What happens if a GC rejects my certificate?+

Usually it's a wording mismatch โ€” the wrong entity named, missing waiver of subrogation, or limits that don't meet their contract. Send us exactly what they flagged and we'll reissue a corrected certificate right away.
